In August of 2013, we started a campaign for an East Coast real estate investor who had a negative legal term appearing next to his name as a suggestion in Google.
Not only was this hurting his ability to recruit new investors for his real estate endeavors, the suggestion was also calling attention to a related negative document that appears about him on the internet.
This is a common problem – the negative suggestion gets clicked on because people are curious and then they quickly find the negative content. This 1-2 punch can bring a business owner or individual to his knees.
The wrinkle with this campaign is that the client’s first name is one like mine where both Michael and Mike are used interchangeably. So, we had to clear the negative suggestion for BOTH terms. That meant we had to perform the positive searches for both versions of all the positive keywords.
Autocomplete Campaign Summary
Volume For Negative Term: 0 searches per month. According to Google Keyword planner, the client name + negative term showed no search activity. Both his name and nickname showed zero monthly searches with the negative term. The client’s name alone had 110 monthly searches.
Strategy: Aim for 20+ searches per month for each of 15-20 positive keywords from all over the United States. Later in the campaign, this client enlisted the help of his close friends to perform some searches in his local market using our DIY instructions. This helps to speed things along and also serves as insurance in case Google localizes the autocomplete results.
Campaign Start Date: August 7, 2013
Autocomplete Corrected: January 20, 2014
Result: This campaign took longer than expected. But after 5 1/2 months, our outcome was successful. Now, when you type in the client first name and last name OR his nickname and last name, all of the suggestions are positive and relate to his career as a real estate developer and investor.
This is another client who I intend to stay in touch with. He has referred me new business and we both share a passion for effective online marketing.
